What water does to a home, hour by hour

The single biggest factor in a water loss is how fast someone starts drying it. Here is roughly what happens when water sits:

• First minutes to hours: water spreads across floors and wicks up walls, soaking into drywall, baseboards, carpet, and subfloor. Finishes start to swell and furniture stains.
• Within 24 to 48 hours: drywall softens and swells, wood warps, and, in New York's humidity, mold can begin to grow. Odor sets in.
• After a few days: materials that could have been dried and saved now have to be removed and replaced, mold spreads through wall cavities, and you move from a cleanup into a much larger reconstruction.

That timeline is the whole argument for calling right away, even for a leak that looks minor. Getting equipment in during the first day is often the difference between drying your floor and replacing it.

Not all water is equally risky

Restoration grades water in three categories, and it changes how a job is handled. Category 1 is clean water from a supply line or overflowing tub. Category 2 ("gray water") carries some contamination, like a dishwasher or washing-machine discharge. Category 3 ("black water") is grossly contaminated, sewage and flood water, and has to be treated as a biohazard. We assess the category first, because it decides what can be dried and saved versus what has to be removed.

Why "it looks dry" isn't dry

The most common water-damage mistake is stopping too early. A floor can feel dry on top while the subfloor, the wall cavity behind the baseboard, and the framing underneath are still wet, and that hidden moisture is exactly what turns into mold weeks later. Our process is built around finding and removing that moisture:

• Extraction. We pull out standing water fast with truck-mounted and portable equipment.
• Moisture mapping. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging to trace how far the water actually traveled, including inside walls and under flooring, not just where it's visible.
• Structural drying. Air movers and dehumidifiers are placed to dry the structure to a measured standard, not just until it looks done.
• Monitoring. We check moisture readings until the materials are genuinely dry, then rebuild what had to be removed.

Where does water hide? Under hardwood and tile, inside wall cavities, behind baseboards and cabinets, in insulation, and in the subfloor. Finding it is the part that separates a proper dry-out from a callback in a month.
