Sewage Cleanup
A sewage backup is Category 3 water, a biohazard. We extract it, remove what cannot be saved, and decontaminate the space to a genuinely safe standard.
Overview
Sewage is not a mess you clean with a mop and a bucket. It is Category 3 water, carrying bacteria and viruses into everything it touches, and it soaks into porous materials that then have to be removed, not just dried. All Star handles sewage backups in full protective gear: we extract the contamination, dispose of it safely, treat every surface with antimicrobial, dry the structure, and sanitize the space so it is safe to live and work in again.
Why It's Different
Restoration pros grade water in three categories, and sewage is the worst of them. Category 1 is clean water from a supply line. Category 2 is "gray water" with some contamination, like a washing-machine overflow. Sewage backups are Category 3, or "black water", grossly contaminated water that can carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites. That classification is the whole reason a sewage backup is handled differently from a burst pipe: it is a health hazard first and a water problem second.
The instinct after a basement backup is to grab a mop and start bagging things, but Category 3 water makes that genuinely risky. The contamination isn't only in the visible water, it soaks into drywall, carpet, padding, and the bottom of wood framing, and it becomes airborne as things dry. Porous materials that have touched black water usually can't be disinfected and saved; they have to be removed. Doing this without proper protective equipment, containment, and disposal can spread contamination through the rest of the home and put your family at risk. This is one of the few restoration jobs where "wait for the pros" is the safe answer, not the upsell.
Sewage backups don't wait for business hours, and the health risk grows the longer contaminated water sits. If you have a backup, keep everyone out of the affected area and call us, day or night.

Most come from main-line clogs, tree roots in old clay pipes, grease buildup, or heavy rain overwhelming the combined sewer system, especially in low-lying areas.
